GASN is working to reduce the number of deaths and disabilities due to heart disease and stroke, and at the same time, eliminate disparities among the faculty and staff, parents and caregivers of Georgia students.  The cardiovascular health workplan is guided by six priority areas: improve blood pressure control, improve high blood cholesterol control, increase awareness and recognition of signs and symptoms of heart attacks and strokes and calling 911, improve quality of care for cardiac emergencies, improve emergency response and eliminate disparities.  These are directly in line with the Healthy People goals and objectives.

According to the 2009 Georgia Data Summary: Cardiovascular Disease, cardiovascular disease continues as the leading cause of death in Georgia.  Sadly, the same Summary reported that nearly 2.3 million Georgia adults (33%) do not know the modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease!

School Nurses are in a key position to educate the largest workforce in the state of Georgia to the priority areas noted above!  They are increasingly sought out for their nursing knowledge and consultation by the staff they work with daily.  They provide blood pressure screenings and counseling on a walk in basis, and become very knowledgeable of their educational co-workers norms, lifestyle, stressors and etc.  By providing School Nurse specific tools and resources, each Georgia School Nurse will be equipped to design an effective strategy to engage her workforce and take appropriate steps to address the priorities in a way that engages them and effects assimilation of the information and causes behavioral changes.
Finally, many Georgia School Nurses, when provided the appropriate resources, quickly apply these same tools and resources to effectively reach the parents and other guardians of their students.  School Nurses are encouraged to “cast a wide net” when considering their sphere of influence.  All of our resources are available for your use throughout your worksite, school, community and faith organizations.

We encourage you to maximize all of the cardiovascular health resources made available to you – the trainings, electronic resources, tool kits and etc.  Please join us as we work together change the cardiovascular health outcomes in Georgia.  Your Cardiovascular Task Force is led by Alison Ellison, Georgia Project SAVE Director, and she would welcome your participation.  Contact Alison at alison.ellison@choa.org
