The primary goal of GASN’s Immunization plan is that all Georgia School Nurses will assume ownership of and leadership in statewide efforts to ensure that Georgia students and staff have the highest rates of immunization compliance in the nation by 2016 to reduce or eliminate vaccine preventable diseases. There are many facets involved in reaching this goal, but paramount to it all, is the active involvement of every School Nurse across the state.
Statewide, many children remain under-immunized. Even though our Georgia immunization rates are high, this under-immunized population leaves the potential for outbreaks of disease. According to the Georgia Immunization Program, many adolescents and adults are under-immunized as well, missing opportunities to protect themselves against diseases such as Hepatitis B, influenza, and pneumococcal disease.
While Georgia’s school entry Immunization requirements remain as minimum acceptable standard, GASN is working to make sure that proper immunization education occurs so that more Georgians will seek to obtain the recommended immunizations. GASN’s Immunization Task Force Chairwoman is Suzanne Sumner, ssumner@colquitt.k12.ga.us . If you're excited or just interested in immunizations, the Immunization Task Force would welcome your participateion! Just email Suzanne or Marsha Pierce and we'll add you to our team!
