Obesity & Physical Activity / Nutrition

Oral HealthAsthma

Obese children are more likely to become obese adults.  Georgia schools are filled with overweight and obese students.  At the same time, School Nurses are keenly aware that the incidence of chronic diseases among the school-aged population is dramatically increasing.  As the primary licensed healthcare providers on Georgia school campuses, School Nurses are increasingly seeking more effective opportunities to prevent and control obesity and other related chronic diseases.

Obesity prevention and other chronic diseases must be addressed through healthy eating and physical activity initiatives for students and staff alike. GASN will focus efforts on promoting and increasing healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and reduced television/screen time in various settings.  We recognize that consistent with Healthy People guidance, by promoting education and building skills, and implementing policy and environmental changes in and through school-based efforts new lifestyle patterns can be achieved
Currently, new tools and resources are being identified, training initiated and programs are being implemented by School Nurses through our partnerships with Live Healthy Georgia Schools!, Healthier Generations, Southeast Dairy Assoc., and etc..
We hope that you’ll access the resources and tools provided on this site, and contact us when we invite GASN members to form our Obesity Task Force soon!
